Same-sex marriage and CJI
CJI C Y Chandrachud is known in legal circles for his impeccable integrity, intelligence, and liberal outlook.
While he is one of the youngest CJs in the country in years, I understand he could have reached the position even earlier if he had a little higher level of elasticity.
Son of another CJI, and whose son is a scholar by himself (unlike the professional sons of the ruling dispensation who need parents’ recommendation to run BCCI, join ORF, found Think Tanks, or even get legal clients), Chandrachud is a class of his.

Such is his stature, that though there were definite concerns about his term overlaying that of the next elections, and some whisper campaigns started about his progeny being a foreign national, the power that does not dare to supersede him.
And from the time he came, CJI Chandrachud has shown what a court can do. After the forgettable stints of Bobde, Gogoi, and Mishra (of course, UU Lalit covered himself in glory even in a very short time), DYC is such a fresh breath of air.
If we care for the country, we can trade some time from IPL and look at the live proceedings of the Constitutional benches. See how the critical questions are being asked about Maharastra defections, Bilkis Bano, NSA, and now same-sex marriage.
No wonder when the deliberations on the same-sex case started, it expanded to include sexuality and our evolving understanding of the same. Some of the most progressive utterances have been made by CJI in this regard, which is such a breath of fresh air in a country where being liberal is now almost a crime, and being abusive and uncouth is the hero.
No wonder CJI Chandrachud faced resistance mockery, and vicious trolling too. I am not surprised by the right wing doing it, egged on by the government (well statements like “same-sex marriages are an urban elitist concept” leave nothing to the imagination on which side it stands). But I was so surprised to see so many so-called “liberals” joining the bandwagon, with their very limited understanding of the issue garnished by “good English”.

Well, it may earn a few thumbs up for sure, but shows again why so many of the liberals are downright reactionary, with a cloak. And occasions like this bring out their true self.
CJI does not need to prove anything to anyone. If we are looking, even the adoption of two differently abled children (out of four) shows what he and his family stand for.
And for mockery — well giants will always make the pests uncomfortable.
Just like when Vidyasagar circulated a draft of the “Hindu Widow Remarriage Act”, ~600 supported him and ~36,000 opposed him.
It ultimately went through and became a law. Vidyasagar lived, even after 150 years?
The ones who “trolled” him? Who cares?
